Sublime moments of silent film


Honouring the grandeur of silent cinema, these films are mainly introduced as film-concert performances accompanied by the National Orchestra of Lyon or on organ or piano. On the programme: Robert Wiene's seminal masterpiece of German Expressionism, The Cabinet of Dr Caligari; Alfred Hitchcock's melodrama The Manxman; Wilhem Thiele's delightful gem, Adieu, Mascotte; films by Jean Renoir, Yasujiro Ozu, Albert Capellani and burlesque treasures with restorations by the Keaton Project.

The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari by Robert Wiene (Das Cabinet des Dr. Caligari, 1920, 1h17)
At a carnival, the strange Dr. Caligari exhibits a somnambulist who predicts the future. One death follows another in the little village... A founding film of German Expressionism and a classic of the terror genre. Stupefying.

The Manxman by Alfred Hitchcock (1929, 1h49)

To marry Kate, Pete must go abroad to make his fortune. He entrusts the former to his friend Philip, and it's love at first sight... Hitchcock's last silent film, a melodramatic love triangle.

Silent gems

Le Nabab by Albert Capellani (1913, 55min, STA)
Bernard Jeansoulet supports his brother Louis and his mother through his work. Louis finds a job in Paris, where he gets carried away by the intoxicating atmosphere, and ends up in prison... An adaptation of Alphonse Daudet’s work by one of the pioneers of cinema.

Jean Dubois d'Ombelles, a young bourgeois poet, is called up for military service at the same time as his valet Joseph Turlot (Michel Simon)... Jean Renoir's last silent film, a year before the arrival of talkies.

Adieu, Mascotte by Wilhelm Thiele (1929, 1h26)
To save a friend in trouble, Mascotte (Lilian Harvey) sells herself at an auction to Jean. He then uses her to make his unfaithful wife jealous... A humorous German romantic comedy, a real gem.

Buster Keaton!

Spite Marriage d'Edward Sedgwick & Buster Keaton (1929, 1h16)
Modest Elmer marries the beautiful actress Trilby Drew, who stars in a play that he has seen thirty-five times. Unbeknownst to Elmer, he is being used to make her old flame jealous...  A comic genius, Keaton once again takes us from laughter to tears in this unpredictable tale.

Dragnet Girl by Yasujiro Ozu (Hijosen no onna, 1933, 1h41)
Doing her job as a secretary during the day, at night Tokiko is back with the gang of thugs led by her lover Joji. She watches over the dance hall run by these crooks... At the crossroads of genres, between thriller and melodrama, a Japanese crime film in the American style.
