The spirit of the festival:
The Lumière film festival is a worldwide event dedicated to classic cinema. Every October in Lyon, the birthplace of the Lumière Cinematograph, the world of cinema celebrates its vitality and heritage through a contemporary journey to the works of the past (restored films, retrospectives, guests, tributes, film-concerts...). Thanks to all the movie theatres and venues in Lyon and its metropolitan area, the festival radiates throughout the city and beyond, reaching a wide audience.
Each of the nearly 450 screenings are introduced by actresses, actors, filmmakers, film critics or by members of the festival team.
The Lumière Award is presented every year to a personality of the cinema for his or her entire body of work. In 2022, Tim Burton has received the Lumière Award and succeeds Jane Campion, Jean-Pierre et Luc Dardenne, Francis Ford Coppola, Jane Fonda, Wong Kar-wai, Catherine Deneuve, Martin Scorsese, Pedro Almodovar, Quentin Tarantino, Ken Loach, Gérard Depardieu, Milos Forman and Clint Eastwood.
Retrospectives dedicated to great filmmakers who have made or are still making cinema history, of all genres and all eras.
Invitations to actresses and actors, filmmakers, film music composers.
Restored prints on the big screen in the theater: See films in the best conditions.
Huge film screenings at the Halle Tony Garnier, the Auditorium of Lyon and the Conference Center.
A discovery of silent cinema with cinema concerts.
Master classes and the opportunity of special encounters thanks to the festival guests.
Exhibitions and the cinema and photography fair.
